Lost Spring. Lost Year is an extension of my Lost Spring series, completing a year of flora collecting, and edited for two 530cm high LED screens on the facades of Museum W in Weert, Limburg, which reopened following refurbishment in 2022 designed by Maurice Mentjens.
The animation, edited from a 12-month cycle represented by 52 plants, scrolls slowly across the screens, as if being mechanically pulled through the museum building itself, revealing glimpses of the images from one screen to the next. It echoes the realities of the first month in lockdown when in home isolation, observing life through my window. The series offers space and awareness to the distortions of the ‘natural’ or anticipated seasonal rhythms of plants and their blooming, brought about through our climatic shifts.
The video was the inaugural commission for the building’s new golden façade. It has provided a very exciting and unexpected opportunity to take a simple and small gesture of lockdown connectivity into a new scale and form. Claiming the building as my own object and installation, it also references the magic lanterns of early animations, some of which are held within the museums collection.
The new design of the facade and interior has received extensive critical acclaim and global publicity.
