Sea of Trees, 2008

A series of colour photographs taken in Japan at the base of Mount Fuji, within the forest Aokigahara Jyukai, or Sea of Trees.
The forest is reportedly the world's second most popular suicide location.

The surface of the land is distorted and twisted, due to volcanic action, nullifying the accurate activity of compasses. The darkness knows of sadness and last breaths.

Following instructions, I set off on a trail into the forest told to be the last resting place of many desperate individuals each year, who chose to die within its lonely yet cradling arms. Their quiet breath whisper from the trees bark.
